Students often ask, "when will I use this?" The answer should be "every day!" All fields of Social Studies join together to create a cohesive understanding of the world and the way it functions. The study of history provides narrative interpretations of how the past has shaped the world we know today. World Geography goes a step further by explaining the historical boundaries and the cultural identities within them. Government enables students to be engaged in the American political landscapes of their state and nation. The study of economics introduces students to fiscal responsibility and money management. Clearly the phrase “social studies” can cover a significant range of pertinent educational material.
I believe it is my job as an educator to make learning fun and creative. Music I feel is the best way to this! Creating songs and rhymes to help retain historical information as well as using songs from folk repertoires to explain concepts will help students recall information in time of need. The ability to identify songs and know what happened when is a unique and effective way to approach the subject of Social Studies as a whole.
