"This year marks my ninth full year as a secondary social studies educator! My teaching journey began even further back, however, in 2009 as an undergraduate at the University of Michigan School of Education. Afterwards, I was awarded an English Teaching grant in Madrid, Spain as a Fulbright Scholar, and then worked for a couple years as a Spanish teacher in Detroit. Throughout this formative time in education, I tutored on and off in many subjects, such as conversational English and Spanish, guitar, and history. I always enjoyed the one-on-one aspect of tutoring and getting to hone in on the specific needs of the individual student.
In 2014 I could not pass up an opportunity to complete a Master of Arts in Teaching for secondary social studies in New York City, and moved there to work on my degree and teach in a high performing charter high school in Brooklyn. I ended up living there for the next six years before coming home to Michigan in the fall of 2020. Nowadays, I teach both subjects I love - Spanish and history - at a small school in northern Michigan close to Traverse City. As some say, life is better by the bay.
I have been a part of groups for English to Spanish language exchange (called "intercambios") several times, both in the U.S. and abroad, and have a wide range of knowledge about Spanish language, literature, and culture.
History is my major from my undergraduate degree, but most importantly a life passion of continual study. I have experience teaching AP World History, both before and after the major exam revisions, and have been involved in curriculum work for AP U.S. History.
My teacher toolbox can help you unpack a difficult writing prompt in your history class, find new ways to remember difficult historical vocabulary or concepts, or get you prepared for that speaking exam in your Spanish class!" less...
