"I graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science with Distinction. I majored in Human Development and minored in Psychology. I have tutored students between 8 to 15 years old, one on one in a variety of subjects including elementary math, reading, spelling, middle school science, everyday homework help/study skills, and high school French which I did as a student volunteer. At Cornell, I was part of Science and Technology Entry Program, in which I tutored middle school students in science, technology, and math. Additionally, I have tutored elementary level students by assisting them complete their daily academic tasks throughout the entire school day, aided them in their schoolwork as needed, and helped them complete their homework once school finished, primarily in elementary math.
I have worked with students to develop strategies to stay on track by checking for understanding periodically throughout the session and allowing for small breaks as rewards for every given segment of work completed, which has increased their motivation to get the work done. This is a key facet of my approach to tutoring students; I seek to acquire knowledge of how a specific child learns best. I’m eager to help students develop their skills which aid their ability to complete tasks, process information, and meet their goals, through aspects like planning, following directions, staying focused, time management, and self-control. Additionally, as I took several courses relevant to being a tutor, including Educational Psychology, I have applied my educational learning skills into my previous tutoring sessions. As I took numerous psychology and human development courses and currently work in mental health/psychology research, I’m eager to assist students in learning content in psychology. I will personalize each session to best fit the student's learning style. I also feel strongly about keeping parents engaged and updated with their child's progress, to ensure their child's learning continues beyond each session." less...
