My first tutoring experience was for a family friend who needed help in geometry. I helped my tutee understand topics in a way that his teachers could not convey by breaking down problems step by step and ensuring he could do practice problems with no issues with less help each time until I was confident, he could handle that type of problem alone. After a semester of tutoring, I was able to help him bring his grade up from a failing grade to a high B. I use this to motivate the structure of my lessons as I believe that a one-hour session can only go so far.
My next tutoring experience was as a volunteer for the City Tutors of New York, where I helped tutor students from underfunded neighborhoods in New York. Here I helped tutor elementary school kids in basic math in a way that was digestible for them, as well as middle school math for the Regents Exam. My next tutoring experience was as part of the UTeach program at UT where I helped design and teach math and science lesson plans in elementary and middle school classrooms. I gained a better understanding of structure and organization in lesson plans. My latest tutoring experience that is currently ongoing is as a Peer Tutor for a Biomedical Engineering Numerical Methods lab, where I help fellow undergrads digest the material and help guide them towards the answer without giving it to them. I also planned and taught a lesson for the class on solving systems of non-linear equations with numerical methods, which helped me develop confidence to explain high level subjects that I am capable of teaching." less...
