"I am currently finishing my PhD in Aerospace Engineering at The University of Cambridge University and am looking for part time tutoring work. Having provided tutoring in the past and being interested in education, I believe that this is a good fit for me.
Approach to tutoring
• Focus on the positives of my students, providing an environment where they are comfortable with making mistakes while building their confidence in the subject matter.
• I prepare specific additional questions and problems for my students to ensure that they have fully understood the concept being taught, rather than just following the patterns.
• Using visualisations to help students to understand abstract concepts in maths and physics.
• Using real world analogies to help students understand abstract concepts, for example when teaching algebra, I replace mathematical symbols with shapes or objects (i.e. replacing X with an apple and Y with an orange).
• I enjoy passing on my own personal learning techniques if it suits an individual, for example, using mind maps as opposed to using sequential information
• I try to stimulate the young person’s passion in subjects, especially when they are applying to university, as this is an important skill to have for personal statements and interviews. For example, I suggested to one of my students to experiment with electronics and electrical engineering using Arduinos (a commonly used prototype tool used across all age groups for building digital devices). The young person made a simple robot with this tool of his own accord. I find it greatly rewarding to encourage young people to follow their passion and this is something I want to continue to do in the future." less...
