"Once upon a time, a few years ago, I dreamed of being an English teacher. While I have not majored in the subject in college, I still have my aspirations. Working part-time as a waitress I find I have more time on my hands then I truly know what to do. When this became a problem during the school year I signed up to be a tutor, here, at the College. I covered subjects ranging from psychology to Mass Media (for which I was the Teaching Assistant). Between this and volunteering with several youth organizations in the community I have come to once again love teaching.
Working with Write Stuff on campus and UNITY with the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition, I have begun to understand what it means to teach. My work as a volunteer brought me to a whole different age range of students.
Write Stuff is a writing initiative with which we bring students from surrounding middle and elementary schools to campus and set them up with mentors who guide them through writing prompts. My own mentee, Tommy, will be returning for a third semester after having a poem we had work-shopped, published in a paper. By being patient, understanding and gently corrective I have helped Tommy navigate the world of literary works and will hopefully see him succeed further.
Having worked with UNITY, a youth leadership program, I have gained assurance in my ability to handle over-active teens as well as high-pressured situations regarding the organization and implementation of certain off-the-cuff activities.
I hope this description gives you a glimpse- please let me know if I can help." less...
