"Hello my name is E! I’m currently a junior at Wheaton College (MA) working towards double majors in English and Secondary English Education and a minor in Religion. During my sophomore year, I took a course specifically on tutoring writing and I have spent the last year working as a Peer Writing Tutor at my college. I work with students at different stages of their writing process, and help students think outside of the box when it comes to formatting their essays. The transition from high school to college writing can be a big jump for students who benefited from the extra structure in high school, so I teach them strategies to break out of that mold and have some fun with what they are learning and writing about.
From helping students in the brainstorming process and interpreting essay prompts to polishing final drafts, I meet students where they are at so they make a finished piece of work they can be proud about. When students struggle understanding where they need to start, I help them organize things into smaller steps so they feel less intimidated and overwhelmed by their assignments, and a part of that comes from understanding the importance of incorporating different learning styles. Additionally, I think one of the most valuable skills someone can grow with their writing is to have their own voice. Seeing a person’s thoughts and personality through their work adds something to it that can’t be made through grammar alone, so I make sure to find the perfect balance between academic and stylistic writing.
Writing can be difficult without the proper resources and help, and while I have a lot of tools I can pull out, if students or parents know of any methods that help them in their process I would be happy to hear them and use that as our starting point. I am easy to reach and will do my best to provide timely responses. If you have any questions or want to schedule a session with me please feel free to reach out! I look forward to working with you." less...
