"Dear potential Parents and Students,
Hi there! I'm Beth and I am a nerd at heart and a lifelong learner. As a tutor I am able to pass my love of knowledge onto students. I pride myself on using unconventional methods to reach students who may feel excluded by the traditional educational model. I have professional experience as a tutor as well as with classroom instruction, but I find the most joy in working with students one on one and progressing beyond their expectations. My educational background is broad and diverse, I have a BA in Comparative Literature (focused on science fiction and technology theory), an MA in Media Studies (internet focus) and although incomplete, my PhD work is in Communication and Media studies (research focused on sustainable technology design). I'm also alternate route certified to teach High School English.
As a tutor, my areas of expertise include SAT & ACT English and Reading prep, K-12 English Language Arts, K-10 Mathematics, K-12 Study Skills, Homework Support and Organization. I am also somewhat familiar with Latin and Spanish, K-8 Science and Social Studies/History. I have experience in working with students with a variety of special needs including ADHD, Perceptual Impairments and Auditory Processing challenges. I'm also familiar with various standardized test accommodation options. I do all these on a weekly basis through my current employment, and I am 100% ready to talk about the differences between the new and the old SAT.
I am able to convey and share my love of language and stories without being exclusionary. I use a lot of Pop Culture references in my material and connect with students over shared interests such as video games, comic books and horses. I try and infuse what I love (sci fi and media) with what I do (tutoring). I'm not your typical staid tutor either, which helps me work with students who may feel discomfort with standard educational roles.
I look forward to hearing from you and will respond to all inquires promptly." less...
