"Hello chemistry students! My name is Morgan. I am excited to work with you. I have been tutoring and teaching chemistry for over a decade. For the past few years, I taught chemistry as a college professor. In addition to teaching in the classroom, I enjoy tutoring high school and college students in one-on-one sessions.
I am passionate about teaching and helping students understand chemistry. In fact, I decided to go to graduate school so I could pursue a career teaching chemistry. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry and my Ph.D. in Chemistry. My dedication to teaching has been recognized by faculty and students alike. Several years ago, I received a competitive fellowship for teaching excellence. As a college professor, students continually rate my feedback as highly effective and helpful. In response to an anonymous survey about my teaching, one of my students wrote, “I felt like I could always come to her with questions, and she would make sure that we understood concepts and would continue explaining in different ways until we got it.”
Chemistry can be a challenging subject for students to learn. Conceptual understanding must be coupled with mathematical expression. Because chemistry can be quite abstract, I like to use lots of sketches and drawings to help students visualize and understand what is happening on a molecular level. Additionally, I believe that it is important to tailor my approach to each student. I like to connect new concepts with what students already know, which acts as an anchor. Then, we work through the new material together. Some students like seeing multiple examples with guidance from me to help them make connections. Other students prefer step-by-step instructions for problem solving, and some students benefit from a theoretical explanation before diving into applications. I am happy to use whatever strategy works best for each student. The goal is for students to have that “lightbulb” moment, when something clicks and they finally understand." less...
