"I love teaching: the learning, the problem-solving, the brain pathway connections, and the human connections. Math doesn't have to be shrouded in mystery, writing doesn't have to be torturous, and no students should feel shame for not "getting it" intuitively. Learning can be challenging in so many ways for different brains and life experiences, but learning can also can be fun, and I enjoy seeing the satisfaction, confidence, and wonder that come with understanding and success.
I have been passionate about education my whole life. At nine years old, I conned my younger siblings into letting me teach them Animorphs-based biology "classes," and I never stopped trying to convince people around me that learning is incredibly fun. I've taken education classes, assisted in high school and college classrooms and student taught. I have tutored independently for decades, as well as within college learning centers and writing centers (including developing orientation processes and trainings for writing-center staff). And, I've continued to learn myself, as a teacher, a learner, a parent and a human! I approach with curiosity and assume the best intentions, and I learn a lot from the people around me.
I have a lot of experience working with frustrated students, adults returning to school, and English Language Learners. My goal is to build transferable skills and confidence with students, so that each session not only addresses the assignment at hand but also provides skills, techniques, and tools that can be used independently.
I have degrees in both mathematics and English from Southwestern University, and my passion for learning and communicating about math, literature, and writing earned me departmental awards for both of my majors.
