"Hello, my name is Scott!
I tutored a variety of math courses for Chapman University's Tutoring and Learning Center for 2 years (February 2020 - May 2022) during my time as a mathematics undergraduate. I graduated in Spring of 2022. Most people I'd tutor would be for Calculus I/II or PreCalculus; however, I would also tutor Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra and Abstract Algebra. I had people I'd tutor every week of the semester, adjusting goals and retention strategies according to their individual learning styles. I achieved A's in all upper division math courses, ending my undergraduate career with a cumulative GPA of 3.82.
Since graduating, I tutored on Wyzant from June to November of 2022. I helped a lot of great people during this timeframe, and some have left supportive reviews, which I greatly appreciate. I have been working towards becoming an actuary, with now over two years of experience as a senior-level life and annuity claims examiner. In this position, I facilitated complex claims, some high profile, all of which were consequential for the families involved. This position further cultivated my tact and problem solving abilities. I have continued to hone my mathematical knowledge as a hobby, and feel more poised than ever before to assist others.
As a child I would pester my family to challenge me with math problems. When I was about seven, my sister began showing me algebra from her class. I struggled with it; however, I kept trying and eventually became relatively proficient with it. This is where I discovered the joy of mathematical persistence and discovery. This feeling still radiates within me upon discovering something new and interesting. I endeavor to evoke this feeling in those I tutor, especially those who believe math to be inaccessible and arcane. I am patient and understanding to this end." less...
