"I'm Leora! I'm currently pursuing my Master of Arts (MA) in Adolescent Social Studies and Advanced NYS Teaching Certification at CUNY Hunter College. Some of my favorite classes in college have involved tons of reading, writing, and thinking through complex ideas. I have many academic interests, ranging from political theory after World War I to debates about the role of the three witches in Macbeth. As a college student with many intellectual curiosities, one of my biggest (and most simple) secrets to success is asking questions! You never know if your question will spark an enlightening conversation or secure a helpful connection—or both! I try to incorporate my love for question-asking into my tutoring approach. As a current writing tutor, I highly value the Socratic method, in which I prioritize questioning as a key method of the tutoring (and writing) process. This tried-and-true method focuses on improvement rather than perfection by making students investigate their own thinking and come up with their own answers. My approach also involves creating a non-judgmental environment where the student feels safe enough to express their ideas and feels supported while doing so.

I have a year of experience peer tutoring college students in writing and English. I work directly with all my students and have weekly appointments with a few of them. I have worked with students from various disciplines on various writing assignments, including lab reports, theses, and personal statement essays. I also have experience as a teaching assistant (TA) for an English course that focused on expository writing and college-level writing.
