"Hello, I'm Gianna and I love English, not just because my mother's British but she was a teacher, my husband is a teacher, and most members of my family are educators. Which is why I studied English and Philosophy at the University of Houston. A peripatetic existence ensued shortly after with two children while my husband completed his PhD. I homeschooled my daughter and several other children in fifth grade; repeating the experience with my son four years later. I think that was when I truly appreciated the availability of tutors; especially for math. I left U of H thirty credits shy of my BA, so I am now enrolled at SNHU to finish my degree in English.
I have been an assistant teacher in both Texas and Vermont. I worked as a paraprofessional with several students in Burlington ISD and because I enjoyed the students so much, I volunteered to lead the fifth grade spelling bee team. While we didn't win, their vocabulary and study skills improved dramatically and we had FUN.
There are many things that make me a wonderful English tutor. I lived for seven years in Ireland, where it was de rigueur at the time to be able to write, read (incessantly) critically and know your authors. I later edited my husband's doctoral thesis, taught both of my children to read and write in cursive and have hand written the alphabet and words in pointillism to help students feel empowered about writing rudimentary words. I also believe that there are many tools to be used in teaching English because of the many different learning styles: kinesthetic, auditory, visual-spatial, verbal linguistic etc. I also am trained in ABA techniques.
My fervent hope is that the students I work with create a pathway to master English. I am an empathetic listener and more importantly, I'm a parent. I am reliable and will respond quickly because I know your time is valuable. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any queries you might have." less...
