"I am Laurie! I graduated from the University of Louisiana Lafayette in Louisiana with a Bachelor's degree in Special Education. I have been teaching in a special education setting for 9 years now. In May 2018 a co-worker of mine and I founded a summer reading program in Pineville, La for students grades 1-8 with special needs called Here We Grow. In October 2018 I was awarded the Decades of Women Award given by the YWCA for my service to children with special needs.
I have a true passion for teaching and feel like EVERY child is capable of learning, no matter their challenges. It is just a matter of finding what "works" for each individual. I feel like my best subject to help students grow is phonics and reading skills. I have experience tutoring students with and without disabilities in reading and feel like I made a significant impact in their academic growth.
I have experience tutoring elementary aged students of all various academic levels in reading. I am a co-founder of Here We Grow summer reading program. Reading has always been my strongest teaching subject.
I have 9 years teaching experience of students with various special needs (down syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Mild/Moderate intellectual disabilities, etc.) My teaching certificate and Bachelor's degree is in Special Education Mild/Moderate grades 1-12. Not only do I have professional expereince with these exceptional children but I have personal expereince as well. My older brother has Cerebral Palsy. Because of him I have been around children with various disabilities my entire life. I have volunteered at many different summer camps, sporting events, and other activities geared to these awesome children.
Please, feel free to contact me and allow me to help you/ your child become the best reader and student they can be!" less...
