"My approach to tutoring is founded on two beliefs. The first is that achieving proficiency in my subject of expertise—English/Language Arts—can be beneficial to students no matter what field they go into in the future. Learning to write with precision and clarity and to read with an analytical eye will serve students well throughout their lives. The second belief underlying my tutoring approach is that all students can become stronger writers and readers provided they are given the right tools and guidance.
For almost 20 years, I have helped students unlock their potential as writers and readers. As a high school English/Language Arts teacher, I have worked with 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. I have taught literature and poetry as well as research writing and creative writing. I have also taught students how to better prepare for the reading and writing sections of the SAT and ACT. In my writing instruction, I typically start by giving students a structure for writing well-developed paragraphs. We then move on to longer writing projects like essays. In my writing instruction, I give plenty of constructive feedback, and I stress the importance of outlining and revision. In addition, I devote time to ensuring students have a firm grasp of grammar. In my reading instruction, I encourage students to adopt a strategic approach that emphasizes slowing down, checking one’s own comprehension, and making predictions.
I earned my BA from Georgetown University (graduated summa cum laude) where I majored in English, and I earned my MAT (Master of Arts in Teaching) from Brown University. I spent my junior year of college at Oxford University where I studied Shakespeare, creative writing, and 20th century drama. For the past 19 years, I have taught high school English. In 2019, my school awarded me a faculty fellowship for teaching excellence. I am licensed to teach Integrated Language Arts (grades 7-12) in Ohio.
I look forward to meeting you and helping you reach your full potential as a reader and writer!" less...
