"Hi, I’m James! I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Art and a minor in History of Art and Visual Culture. I earned my first Master’s degree in Fine Art from San Francisco Art Institute, where I began my tutoring career as a writing tutor. Helping students achieve their writing goals was an amazingly rewarding experience for me. After I got my second Master’s degree in Fine Art while studying abroad at the China Academy of Art, I became a certified TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) teacher.
I worked as an online volunteer TEFL teacher for a year, teaching one-on-one lessons before teaching English in the classroom. I’ve now been teaching English as a Foreign Language for 3 years. I have also been teaching Geometry and Algebra I in the classroom for a year. Overall, I now have over 7 years of teaching and tutoring experience, both in the classroom and online.
Throughout my career of teaching and tutoring, I have continued to hone my ability to tailor lesson plans and activities that align with the pace and interests of each student. I believe in the importance of adaptability and discovering entry points to encourage engagement and interest. I believe that students learn best when they are able to follow their own interests and curiosities. That is why I think that listening is such an important skill for an educator to possess. The ability to pick up on the needs of a student is important, but also learning about their interests and preferences leads to developing an individualized curriculum that can keep them engaged and inspired to learn more.
I’m happy to create individualized lessons based on the level, needs and interests of every student. I’m flexible and open to any suggestions from parents and students. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or to schedule a lesson!" less...
