"Hi! I’m Rachel. I’ve spent my life engaged in fine arts as a creator, student, teacher, and appreciator. Since childhood I could be found toting crayons, paints, drawing supplies, or play clay. Creative energy might make itself present at any given moment! As a high schooler I specialized in hand-thrown pottery, which to this day remains as my first love. I studied Art Education at Edinboro University of PA, where I realized my creative potential. I excelled at every medium in which I studied, surprising myself as I discovered that I could do just about anything creative. My first teaching job came after graduation and took me to a high school in South Central PA. There I taught for five years, working with students in grades 9-12. I taught four levels of Drawing/Painting, as well as Sculpture 1. I truly enjoyed my years of teaching, finding satisfaction and fulfillment as I helped my students to realize their capabilities. Nothing can compare to witnessing the expression on a student’s face as s/he grasps and implements a creative concept, understanding that the power to create exists within them.
I’ve spent many years away from formal teaching as I raised my family. During those years I expanded my repertoire of art experiences, developing interest and skill in stained glass, fiber arts, and needle-felting, while continuing to hone my drawing and painting skills. I am in the process of completing my MI Teacher Certification, and am actively searching for an art teaching position locally. Tutoring appeals to me because I really enjoy working with students, helping them to develop their talents and sense of pride in their work.
My experiences as an artist and educator have included a vast array of topics in art history, theory, and art media. My area of art history expertise is Early and Late Twentieth-Century Art. My lessons consist of technique and application as well as historical themes. I am proficient with a wide range of drawing and painting media.
