"I'm Alexis! I graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor's in Mass Communications. English and writing have always come easy for me, and ever since I discovered that, I have been tutoring my peers. I was an English peer tutor all throughout my undergraduate career. I currently work at a University in the Writing Center where I work as a Special Instructor and tutor college students in writing and English every day. I have been working here since I graduated in 2013. My specialty is in writing, but as a result of tutoring writing and graduating with a Bachelor's in mass communications, I have an affinity and strong understanding of grammar as well.
When I work with students, I take pride in instilling self-esteem so they can be confident in the skills they already possess. I usually start that process by doing an assessment through either conversation or a worksheet/writing prompt to see where the student is academically. I give them a pep talk and help them understand that their academic goals are achievable and that we will work reach them together. From there, I cater my lesson based on what they know and what they are trying to learn. I take pride in being able to break down concepts that are challenging for students and providing them with tips or tricks that will assist them with future assignments. What's most important to me is providing students with the tools to be successful long after our tutoring sessions. Teaching at any level requires a certain grace and a great amount of patience, and I believe I have those qualities. The success stories of past students receiving high grades on essays, obtaining scholarships from personal statements I have reviewed, or just grasping difficult grammar concepts contribute to my purpose.
Due to my access to a college campus, I have a wealth of resources that help me assist students, but I am open to whatever resources parents are students are currently using or provide that will help with the process.
As I mentioned before, I work at a University Wr" less...
