"Hi, I'm Sharon! I have over a decade of full-time experience teaching students ages nine through adult, with a focus on middle grades, high school, and college humanities (especially literature, writing, history, and research). I bring warmth, encouragement, and personalized support along with the expertise to tailor lessons to students' goals.
In our time together, we won't just muddle through what's due next or cram for your upcoming assessment--instead, while working with your current assignments, we'll learn and practice transferable academic reading, writing, and study skills that will help you become a more successful, efficient, and independent student. My goal is to teach myself out of a job!
I'm a Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude graduate with a B.A. in International Studies, an EdM in ESOL, PreK-12 NYS teaching certification, and 15+ years of experience teaching English, History, and ESL at an international school and an independent school, coordinating curriculum, and training teachers. I have helped my students, most of whom learned English as a second language (and some of whom were absolute beginners when we began working together), to achieve success in many different AP courses and admission to highly competitive colleges.
I am qualified to work with students at all levels and ages on reading, writing (creative and academic), research, drafting/revising/editing, grammar, vocabulary, public speaking, US and World History, US/British/World Literature, AP English Language/Literature, AP US/World History, AP US/Comparative Government, AP Human Geography, and college entrance essays and applications. A special area of expertise is guiding students through a paper revision and editing process that builds their ability to revise, edit, and fix errors independently.
If you are looking for an enthusiastic partner in your learning who cares about your success and will help you become a stronger, more successful, and more confident student, please contact me!" less...
