"My favorite part of the work is meeting with students one-on-one to facilitate improvements in reading, writing and reasoning, and I look forward to helping you surpass your goals. I especially enjoy working through the great texts and figures in the history of philosophy (including, but not limited to, classical Chinese and Indian philosophy, the philosophers of Greek antiquity and medieval philosophy).
I presently teach philosophy/classics in an honors program as well as at a state research institution. I received my MA in philosophy from a top-ranked (Leiter) program and have also completed four years of PhD work. I have taught my own intro course for three semesters at two well-ranked private liberal arts universities, in which I emphasize philosophical writing, logic and the history of philosophy. I have also provided teaching and research assistance for a total of eight semesters.
My philosophical training (consisting of a two-year MA and four additional years of PhD experience) makes me a very close reader, allowing me to push students to see details they may have missed on a first pass through a text. I have edited texts for academic publications and helped colleagues and students refine their written work. My utilization of the Socratic method of teaching pushes students to improve their own skills so that they can continue to use them independently in the future.
While the options for listing my subjects on this site are somewhat limited, I would also be thrilled to work with anyone who wants to work on philosophy specifically (I have written papers on and taught most areas at least once!). I love just about every subject out there and would be happy to work with you to improve your writing or help you with a difficult text in any area." less...
