"Hello! My name is Amanda and I just graduated from Hamilton College with a major in neuroscience and minors in mathematics and education. I plan to attend SUNY Albany to pursue an M.Ed and become dually certified to teach HS math and biology. I love cats, puzzles, 60s & 70s music, and being outdoors, but my biggest passion is working with kids!
Teaching Experience: I worked for the OESJ summer school program helping teach 7th-8th grade math and also worked one-on-one with a student teaching geometry, even creating my own assignments and quizzes. In college, I spent a year working as a teaching assistant in statistics. I also volunteered tutoring students in local districts and shadowed a math teacher at Whitesboro HS, assisting in AIS & special-ed math classes. Lastly, I remotely tutored 2 HS students: one for 2 years in algebra 2 and pre-calc, the other for 3 years in algebra 1 & 2 and geometry. However, I would say some of my most informative tutoring experience has come from helping my younger brother, who could win an award for his tendency to do things at the last minute! I credit him with teaching me the skill of reviewing a month’s worth of test material in only a few hours! :)
Math Proficiency: I achieved a perfect score on the math section of the SAT and grades of 100, 100, and 99 on the NYS Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 regents exams, respectively. I graduated HS valedictorian with the highest student grade in all of my math classes.
Specialties: I pride myself in being able to work with kids from all backgrounds and have experience teaching students with multiple learning disabilities and behavioral issues. Math is difficult, but through using humor and practices personalized to the needs of each individual, I strive to make it fun, engaging, and easier to understand. I even focused my senior thesis on cognitive neuroscience, investigating student learning. Helping kids build confidence, enjoy learning, and experience that moment when “everything clicks” is what I live for!" less...
