"I have taught science in an American public high school for 22 years, including chemistry, biology, physical science, environmental science and horticulture in grades 8-12. I have taught algebra and geometry at the high school level, and I have also taught math to elementary and middle school students. I have taught classes for all levels of students, including gifted and special education. I have taught English as a second language to elementary students while traveling in China, and also taught English to Chinese students of all grade levels online. I have tutored elementary, middle and high school students online in science and math. I have conducted science demonstrations as a volunteer at local elementary schools and the public library. I am also the parent of a daughter aged 27 who is an attorney and a son aged 23 who is a chef. I was one of 10 finalists for 2013 Georgia Teacher of the Year.
I love tutoring because I am able to connect with and help students as individual learners. When I taught large groups, it was easy for quiet students to avoid sharing their thoughts and questions, but when I tutor I can focus all my attention on the needs of one person. This helps the learner to fully engage with me and the material. It also helps me to reliably assess the understanding of the student and to tailor my instruction towards them. I gain a lot of professional satisfaction from knowing that I have helped a young person to succeed in a subject in which they struggle.
While I have knowledge of the math and science curriculum in all grade levels, my strongest qualification for grades K-6 is my ability to form a connection with individuals that facilitates comfortable conversation for young learners. I am not intimidating, even for shy students. I'm good at reading facial expressions and other clues to indicate if a child is engaged and understanding what we are discussing, and then adjusting my instruction accordingly. I am easy for children to talk to.
