"Hi, I'm Flora! When I was in 7th grade, I had a social studies teacher who made me feel seen, supported, and excited about learning history. I came to love history for the way it is continuously unfolding, and how we can learn about our roles in the present by looking to the past. I decided that year that I wanted to do for others what my influential teacher did for me, and have been an educator ever since.

I graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in History and Gender & Women's Studies, and a minor in Education. Throughout my undergraduate years and after, I worked for five years as a private tutor in the East Bay. In this role, I tutored all subjects for Kindergarten through 6th grade, humanities for 7th through 12th grade, and executive functioning for students of all ages. During these years, I refined my pedagogy and developed my own educational practices.

After tutoring full time for a year after I graduated college, I began pursuing my Master's in Teaching and teaching credential at the University of San Francisco. As part of this program and the credentialing process, I worked as an aide in a 6th grade social studies classroom for a semester, and took over as the full time teacher in the spring. I love teaching 6th grade history, and have been able to learn so much from my students.

My favorite part of being an educator is helping students connect with material and watch them begin to trust their instincts and develop confidence in their ability to understand new information. I love forming relationships with students, and providing them with a supportive and warm environment to engage in critical thinking. I also work with students to create a plan that works for them-- whether their priorities are developing a deep understanding of the content, honing a specific skill, or simply knocking out some work they've been avoiding. Feel free to contact me with any additional questions or to schedule a lesson!" less...
