"Hi, I am Nickie. I am a self-proclaimed grammar geek and a voracious reader! I graduated cum laude from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a degree in English Literature and Linguistic Studies. I love words and language and try to pass that appreciation on to my students. I began tutoring in reading, writing, and language skills with the Literacy Council in 2006. Since moving to North Carolina, I am trying to establish myself here as someone ready to help students of any age and all ability levels.
My lesson plans are adapted and adjusted according to the specific needs and skill level of each student. I am available for any questions or additional help that my students may need. We can spend as much or as little time as needed, at whatever pace works best, to ensure that students understand and are comfortable with the concepts. I am experienced in working with students 1 on 1, in small groups, and in classroom settings. This means that I can be flexible in my teaching style and am always open to trying new techniques.
I am TEFL/TESOL certified through the International TEFL Academy and tutored students in English as a second language through the Literacy Council and spent a year in Spain teaching 6 high school English classes. I have a unique understanding of how complicated and confusing the English language can seem to both native and nonnative speakers. I can help.
I have been very successful in helping my students master the skills they need to succeed with improved comprehension; increased vocabulary and reading speed; understanding how, when, and where to use punctuation correctly to convey meaning; as well as improving grammar and syntax in writing. Sometimes, how you say something is just as important as what you actually say.
I would love to hear from anyone looking for help with English literature or the English language! I have a flexible schedule and should be able to accommodate just about everyone and am very much looking forward to hearing from you!" less...
