"My name is Nicole Ewing, and I am a math tutor! My love for math started in fifth grade when I studied and competed in math competitions and even qualified for the Arizona State Math competition in eighth grade. I continued my love for math in high school, taking AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, and AP Statistics with perfect scores of 5, and continuing to compete in statewide math competitions. I also began math tutoring my peers in my junior and senior years of high school through the National Honor Society. In my junior year I scored a perfect 36 of the math section of the ACT and a 790 of the math section of the SAT. In college, I majored in neuroscience and minored in math. I was a math tutor at Rutgers University through the Honors College, and continued to freelance with other clients. I have experience tutoring math students as young as third graders all the way through college level calculus, as well as helping high schoolers prep for AP tests and the ACT/SAT/PSAT. I can offer a great level of knowledge and passion for math and as a recent college graduate, I have the advantage of being very familiar with the current math curriculum, and the current format of the standardized tests.
My strategy when it comes to tutoring is the identify the types of problems that are proving difficult before the tutoring session through a test or homework sample. Then for each problem type I go through a three step process.
1) I will do a similar problem, carefully breaking down the steps
2) I will walk the student through the problem step by step, once again explaining as we go along
3) Let the student do the problem by themself, using the steps.
Steps will be repeated as necessary. I will then encourage the student to work through more problems using the steps until they feel very confident." less...
