"I’m Ethan, I’m currently a senior at Long Island University - Post. Although I chose to major in music since I am also a keyboard player, I’ve always had a passion for math and thinking of numbers and concepts in a unique way.
The current model of the education system, dating back to the 1800’s, has a one size fits all approach. However I stray from that methodology as much as I can. I’ve been with Mathnasium since February 2023, and I don’t have one set way of teaching concepts to my students. Everyone learns things differently, including myself when I was younger. That being said, I often use my past experience to experiment with different ways the student learns certain concepts, and once I find a way they understand said concepts best, their test scores rise.
At Mathnasium, all students have incentives, as there’s a giant shelf by the entrance with many prizes on it, earned by solving many problems correctly, getting high test scores, mastering a hard concept, etc. With all that said, I am a huge believer in positive reinforcement. Most of my students work hard for one of the prizes on the shelf, but outside Mathnasium, the sky’s the limit with incentives. Of course, they need to work for it, but it’s important to feel accomplished for said work, mostly with something other than a number on a piece of paper. I was a kid recently too, I’m 21, so I know exactly how this felt, not that long ago. That being said, my young age compared to most math tutors on and off this website definitely comes in handy with having a good relationship with my students.
