"Hi I’m Emma and I’m here to help!!

I’m currently enrolled at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign studying to attain my bachelor's in Secondary Mathematics Education. It is my dream to become a high school math teacher, preferably teaching AP Calculus. I graduated high school with a 4.0 unweighted and 4.7 weighted GPA, and was a member of the top 2% of my graduating class. I received a 5 on both the AP Calculus AB and BC exam. I was a member of the ISBE Student Advisory Council, head drum major of my high school marching band, vice president of the National Honors Society, president of the Spanish Honors Society and president of the Future Teachers Club. I have received the Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish and the ETA Those Who Excel Education scholarship. At UIUC, I am also a member of the College of Education's James Scholar Honors Program and Marching Illini.

Ever since I was a young child, I have always wanted to be a teacher. Because of this, I have made it a priority to gain experience working with students from all ages, particularly in mathematics. I have worked in volunteer settings with elementary students through the ICOUNT program in Urbana this semester by leading individualized 15-30 minute long math tutoring sessions, and with high school math students in the past both by leading in class group instruction and as a peer tutor. I will be continuing to build my experience through my undergraduate program and clinicals. As for my tutoring style, I prefer to work with students in a way that works for them specifically, this could range from direct instruction, practice problems, collaborative problem solving, mnemonics, answering student questions thoroughly, etc. Most importantly, my teaching philosophy is to always lead with kindness, optimism, and a more encouragement based style!
