"Hi, I'm Shane! I graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Mathematics from Rutgers University. I am currently pursuing a PhD at Rutgers University as well. I have been tutoring calculus and physics since high school and have started tutoring engineering subjects such as statics, dynamics, fluid mechanics, MATLAB and thermodynamics as I completed these courses during my undergraduate degree. I also have experience as a supplementary instructor in a lecture/classroom style environment for various math courses. In addition to these courses, I have experience tutoring multivariable calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra as well both online and in person.
My fascination with these subjects drove me to do research with a grant from the NASA Space Grant Consortium propelling me into writing a thesis my senior year and extending it as my Master's thesis. I feel that the main downfall many students share throughout math and engineering/physics courses is that they are taught to robotically memorize formulas and problem solving methods without actually understanding the inner mechanisms of why these things work. This was commonplace in college classes with hundreds of students and a book's worth of entirely new material being crammed into a single semester. Not every textbook, professor, or teaching method works for every student. This is why I believe that one-on-one interaction that may not always be available in these college course settings is indispensable. I am passionate about tutoring for being able to see the transition from feelings of frustration and inadequacy in a student to full understanding and an eventual level of fascination and love of the subject that I have.
