"Hi, I’m Shannon! I graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelors in Middle Grades Education in Mathematics, as well as a Special Education Minor from West Chester University. During college, I came to realize that I did not enjoy school as much as I did in elementary. Testing was never my strong suit and lectures were definitely not my preferred learning method. I would rather show my knowledge of content through projects or hands-on activities. During my junior year, I had a professor that taught me how to incorporate different learning styles that encouraged students to think/connect/understand, rather than memorize. This helped me connect my experiences to students experiences and understand that every student has a different preferred learning style. Lectures are for some, but definitely not for all.
After getting my degree, I got my first teaching job in Abington School District where I currently teach 6th grade Mathematics. Math was always a challenge for me when I was younger, but I came to appreciate both the complexity and simplicity of the subject.
In my classroom today, I am able to differentiate and meet all of my students needs to help them be successful. After school, I tutor 6th-7th grade students in Pre-Algebra, who may be struggling with the material. I provide basic instruction and then in depth lessons, depending on what the student needs and how they like to learn. I am very accommodating and consistently have an open communication with the student, parents, and teacher. I believe one of the most important aspects of tutoring and teaching is connection. I believe every student can be successful with a teacher who is willing to put in the effort to help them get there.
On the side, I play chess and enjoy it immensely. I have been playing since I was 9 years old and have learned about strategy and patience. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions and want to schedule a lesson!" less...
