"Hi! My name is Stephen and teaching is what I love to do. I have over 12 years' experience tutoring and teaching students of all ages, and I'm always ready for a new assignment. I have extensive experience helping my clients prepare for the GRE, SAT, and ACT. My method is to teach not only the material on the tests, but also the test-taking process itself. I work with my students on time management, guessing strategies, and overcoming test anxiety. I have scored above the 90th percentile on the ACT, SAT, and GRE, so I know the material thoroughly myself, but the method of taking the test can make all the difference for a student looking for a few more points.
I have also tutored math for many years, working on skills ranging from simple arithmetic through Geometry, Algebra II, and Trig. As opposed to standardized tests - in which the result is all-important - I believe comprehension and a consistent method of arriving at solutions should be stressed first, and that improved grades will follow. There is no short-cutting in math, as a solid foundation is always needed before advancing on. I learned this first hand while studying for two years of Calculus and beyond to get my Computer Science degree.
I am currently a Professor of ESL at Universidad Externado in Bogotá, Colombia, where I have been working since January of 2016. I began working in ESL in Chicago in 2010, and since then have worked and lived in Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia. I received my CELTA certification - developed by Cambridge University - in August of 2015. I have experience helping students prepare for academic exams such as the TOEFL and IELTS. I'm also happy to do purely conversational classes.
Email me and let me know how I can help you in your studies. I am happy to work with young children, older children, and adults. I'm eager to get started." less...
