"I love math, love teaching, and love helping others realize and exceed their goals. These are rooted in a lifelong love of learning. I grew up in the DC area and I graduated first in my high school class. As a Dean's List student at University of Virginia, and later at the London School of Economics, I saw first-hand the ways in which a professor, instructor, or tutor with whom a student connects can make a meaningful and positive impact on their lives. These experiences have influenced my professional career as well--I've received numerous awards related to training and mentoring more junior analysts, and even created a small-scale training institute.
I have tutored students in elementary math, algebra, pre-calculus, calculus, economics, and probability/statistics, with varying frequency, for the past 10 years. I started by tutoring friends and family members, but more recently have volunteered in math and homework clubs, including both school-based organizations, and civic organizations such as YMCA and SCAN of Northern Virginia.
I'm a firm believer that the best way to learn is to teach. My tutoring style is a practical, hands-on one. We first review foundational concepts, then apply them as we work through practice problems together. Then, I ask the student to explain back to me what they just heard (helping them along the way as needed, of course). The act of attempting to "teach" me (or someone else) the concepts at hand invariably reinforces those concepts and immediately guides us to the level of understanding needed to master the subject at hand. It also creates a more interactive, participatory environment for the student, who is able to take ownership of the content much more quickly. This "blended learning" technique has been highly effective for me in a variety of subjects and learning environments. It also ensures that each student is appropriately challenged and engaged, without being overwhelmed. Of course, I tailor the approach to the needs and learning styles of each individual student.
