My name is Lisa, and I am a certified English and journalism teacher and am currently the Library Director at the Elgin Public Library in Elgin, IA where I have been happily sharing books and the love of reading for 16 years. Before becoming a librarian, I had 5 years of high school and middle school ELA classroom experience as well as 10 years of private tutoring experience with all age groups in ELA, reading, and writing. I have been an online tutor, both on Outschool.com and through my business, Read to Lead LLC since 2020, and I love this platform.

I teach literacy and reading skills as well as the LOVE of reading to all ages, specializing in grades 2-8. My philosophy is that reading and good books can teach skills across the curriculum. I have seen the love of and interest in reading die in students using a traditional curriculum, and I want that interest and love to last a lifetime!

My tutoring sessions will be individualized, and I use a variety of techniques to do this including phonics work, sight word practice, fluency practice, comprehension work, vocabulary study, and study of longer works for older students. I incorporate age-appropriate literature and make lessons fun with short exercises on varied topics, interactive writing, and games. Because I strive to individualize lessons, I welcome parent and student input and literature suggestions.
