"I'm Julia! I graduated from the University of Chicago with honors as a double major in Chemistry and Romance languages. My two very different majors granted me both a strong command of STEM subjects as well as strong reading and writing abilities. As a result, I am a well-rounded tutor, which is reflected in my nearly ten years of experience tutoring students ranging from kindergarten to college. I have taught kindergarteners how to read and helped college students excel in their science courses. As a tutor and long term substitute teacher, I have also worked with many students with ASD and ADHD, as well as English Language Learners (ELL) student. I currently work at a Title I elementary school as student support, supporting my own small groups in reading and math on a daily basis.
I prefer to tailor my lesson plans to suit student needs. For students who have fallen behind in their coursework, I start with a mini lesson on a topic they are struggling with, then dive into assisting with missing work. This allows us to reinforce what the student has learned in class while completing schoolwork to improve their grade. I typically conclude these lessons by working with the student to create a schedule that will allow them to stay on top of their assignments between tutoring sessions. This method was particularly effective for students struggling with remote schooling during the COVID-19 pandemic. For students who are not struggling to meet deadlines, I begin sessions by introducing the topic in an engaging way, using real-world examples and/or student interests, before explicitly teaching the material. For solving problems, I provide guided examples using a slow-release model before providing students with independent practice opportunities.
Finally, as a high achieving student myself, I am also prepared to support students on their college and graduate school application journeys. I am available for standardized test tutoring as well as admissions essay feedback." less...
