"Introduction - Hello, I'm Kara, and my pronouns are she/her/hers. I look forward to working with you!
I am passionate about science and the environment, skilled at differentiating instruction, love making learning relevant, and believe that all learners can succeed. I believe strongly in putting students in the driver's seat to grapple with real, complex issues in their own communities, and enjoy constructing learning experiences that extend beyond the physical classroom.
When I'm not behind the screen, you'll likely find me reading a good book, making and eating delicious food, watching World Cup soccer, or playing outside (biking, paddle-boarding, hiking, swimming, gardening, camping, or skiing).
My Role - As your tutor, I have the honor of partnering with you to help you work towards your goals. I will be an active member of your team whose role is to work with you to personalize your experience and coach and support you as you grow.
Background and Experience - Over the past 22 years, I've taught Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, AP Environmental Science, Forensic Science, Physical Science, and Astronomy to grades 7 -12 both in-person and online with a wide diversity of students in multiple learning settings.
In addition to formal classroom experience teaching middle and high school science, I have a background in environmental law, experience in lab and field research, and a passion for building public understanding and awareness about issues where science and society intersect. I graduated with honors and hold a B.S. in Biology with a focus on Ecology and Evolution from Cornell University, an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from Saint Michael's College, and a Master of Environmental Law and Policy from Vermont Law School.
I partner regularly with university researchers, policymakers, and regional educators to continually grow as a professional, create opportunities to extend my students' learning beyond the classroom, and to advocate for the environment." less...
