"What is a Tutor?

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition of a tutor is "a person charged with the instruction and guidance of another."

While this is a great basic definition, it misses the nuance of what precisely an instructor should be. A tutor is not merely there to guide a student through regurgitation, but to arm them with the skills to critically solve both familar and unseen problem types. It also provides students with individualized learning in a structured, empathetic environment.

My Take on Tutoring

My goal as a tutor is to expand your student's learning toolkit to make them a more independent and effective learner. Along these lines, I am not answer focused but rather process focused. Anyone with the knowledge set can show someone the steps to obtain the answer, the value of a good tutor is showing the student how to come up with these steps and why they are appropriate for a given scenario. This Socratic teaching form allows me to nurture the student's learning habits with the the ultimate goal of being able to apply these new analysis skills across their studies. I have been a Teaching assistant for 3 years and served as a mentor to 3 students within a research laboratory. These experiences have solidified my love for individualized learning. My experience propelling a wide number of students to success demonstrates my ability to tailor learning to my students and their goals.

I have worked in a research laboratory in the field of molecular and microbiology for 6 years. This has yielded 3 published research articles with 4 more projects expected to be published in the coming year.
