"I became a math major because I couldn't imagine school without doing mathematics. I've worked with students who feel exactly the opposite: they can't imagine enjoying school when "doing" mathematics is part of the equation. In my eight years of teaching (Pre-algebra through Precalculus) and 16 years of tutoring (Pre-algebra through Calculus as well as Integrated Math 1-3 as part of the Common Core Curriculum), I've discovered that many students who just didn't "get math," achieved understanding in a one-on-one setting. Freed from distractions and peer influence and given space to ask all of their questions, they start to "get math,"; they grow in confidence; and mathematics becomes a subject they comprehend and appreciate.

I've also worked with students who enjoy "doing" the math but find that one-on-one tutoring enables their surface level understanding of certain concepts to morph into a deeper conceptual level. This deeper understanding reduces frustration (for both students and parents alike), increases confidence, and frequently leads to improved test scores.
