"Hello! I’m Barbara. I have a BA and an MS in Mathematics, and I think math is beautiful! I also love the world we live in, so I continued on and earned a PhD using statistics and a mathematical model to study the water quality of a large US lake.
I have spent the last 10+ years teaching Introductory Probability and Statistics at a small university. My favorite classes during those years were not those when I was lecturing, but when I gave students time in class to work through practice problems I had created. I enjoyed wandering among them, hearing them think aloud in pairs, guiding their thoughts, and answering questions. And I always enjoyed interacting with students who came to my office for individual help.
My strengths as a tutor are that I have a thorough knowledge of the material in Intro Stats and AP Stats, I am familiar with the concepts that students frequently struggle with, I am very patient, and I want you to succeed. I recognize that Stats is unlike previous math classes you have taken. I will come prepared to a lesson with a good attitude and resources to share.
My request as a tutor is that you come prepared to our meeting with specific questions to ask or with material for me to react to, so that I can determine how to help. Your suggestions about what you think might help are welcome! I also ask that you come willing to work. The only way to become good at anything is to practice.
Besides working with college-age students, I have enjoyed tutoring my own children (while we lived for a time outside of the US), and I have volunteered with adult literacy and ESL programs. I welcome students of all ages. I will do my best to be prompt and clear with all communication.
I look forward to hearing from you and doing statistics together!" less...
