"Hello! My name is Ryan and I have a diverse educational background, with experience in special education, classroom teaching, EL programs, reading interventions, and tutoring. I have a Master's in Teaching from Bethel University, a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of St. Thomas. I have held positions as a Special Education Paraprofessional at elementary and middle school levels, English Learner (EL) paraprofessional at the middle school level, and Reading Interventionist at the elementary level. I have served as a middle school Social Studies Teacher for 7th grade U.S. History and 8th grade English Language Arts (ELA) during distance-learning. Prior to that position, I student-taught in social studies at middle and high school levels. I have also served as a tutor for a Kindergartener, and 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th grade EL learners. I have supported students with Life Science, Algebra, Geometry, Reading, Literature, and Study Skills. My tutoring style is person-centered, with a focus on relationship-building. I often infuse life-skills into my lessons, connecting ideas and content to present and future student experiences. I love to share about my own experiences and happenings in my own life. I am a life-long learner and like to share that passion with students. I also take time every session to connect with student life outside of school, recognizing the whole learner.
My teaching is supported by scaffolding methods and informed by Zone of Proximal Development Theory. I have a calm, supportive temperament and am very professional. I tend to push students past their comfortability point, in order to facilitate growth, while preventing excessive frustration and shut-downs. I excel in reading student body-language and identifying proper supports for students. Past parents have commented on my ability to connect with students and identify areas of improvement. I have excellent communication skills and believe in the parent-tutor team approach when supporting students." less...
