"My name is Adam! I graduated from James Madison University with a degree in Mass Communication and from George Washington University with a Master's degree in Education and Human Development. I have 20 years of experience as a special education teacher working with students with a variety of needs. In my current school, I am the chair of the special education department in addition to my role as a teacher. I previously tutored online for one year working specifically with students with disabilities. My approach as a teacher and tutor is to meet my students where they are. Building working relationships with students is something I take pride in. In addition to helping students with academic skills, I strive to help students become better learners.
I have experience working within the K-6 math curriculum and working with students who struggle in math. Math can be anxiety-producing. I aim to reduce the anxiety by taking a skill apart and determining any misconceptions a student may have. I believe in meeting a student where they are and working on skills that may have gaps in understanding.
Writing can be mystifying for elementary and middle school students. Writing based on a prompt is a skill used in all academic areas. Using graphic organizers (such as t-charts, maps, outlines, etc.) can help students organize their thoughts and ease the anxiety around starting a writing assignment. Together, students and I work on proofreading using checklists to ensure high-quality compositions.
Parents are an integral part of the tutoring relationship and I look forward to working with parents to create an environment that fosters a love of learning and meeting academic goals. I am very responsive, so please feel free to contact me with questions or schedule a lesson!" less...
