"Hi! I'm Courtney. I have been teaching for over 20 years. I graduated from Wells College Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Education and Music. After teaching music for 20 years, I became a Special Education teacher, and spent my days in math classrooms working with and learning from exceptional educators. During this time I discovered my passion for math and decided to get my license to teach math.

I feel I bring a unique perspective to teaching. I had to re-learn all of the math that I had been taught when I was in middle and high school, and I had to learn a new way to teach with Common Core. I believe that this helps me to relate to my students in a unique way. I have now been teaching and tutoring math for over 5 years and I truly love it. I am currently an 8th grade math teacher in Asheville, NC. I pride myself on my ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all types of learners. I believe the biggest obstacle to learning math is confidence and I work hard to help all of my students believe they are smart and capable.

In my first tutoring session with a student, I like to have a conversation with them about what they are currently working on in their classroom, what they find challenging in math and what they hope the outcomes of tutoring will be. I then will work through some grade level problems with them to guage their current level of understanding. From there, I create lesson plans that will help fill in any learning gaps that might be present, and work through examples that they are currently working on in their classes. Once we have established a routine and flow to our lessons, I will being to add additional materials that will help them with upcoming classroom lessons.
