"My name is Bailey and I am a current teacher in Harlem, NY. I have experience tutoring elementary aged students as well as AP and college psychology.
I graduated with distinction from Cornell University, majoring in Human Development with a minor in theater. I am now part of Teach For America and teach Kindergarten in an integrated classroom, so I have experience with Special Education students. I am also working towards my Masters in the Art of Teaching with certification in exceptional learners. I have had experience with students of all ages, in both classroom and recreational settings. I have been a counselor for K-5 aged children, as well as 8-10 year old boys with behavioral disorders. I have taught third grade, and volunteered in Nursery-5th grade classrooms in both the US and the UK.
I love tutoring because it can be catered to each students needs. Every child has unique interests, strengths, and growth areas, which can be fostered during these 1:1 sessions. I want to motivate students to take interest in their own academic accomplishments, and celebrate their wins. I appreciate open communication with guardians for younger students and working as a team to best support the learner. In a first session, I hope to get to know the student and see what they hope to gain from this experience. Tutoring should be fun, and I aim to include student voice and choice in sessions.
Math is fun and exciting, and I want students to see that during our sessions. I believe that math should be a hands on experience, full of real life applications. There is also space for student voice during math, whether it is a word problem about Roblox or fractions about cookies. I have experience teaching elementary math, specifically word problems and shape knowledge.
In college, I was a tutor for the psychology department. In this role, I provided one to one tutoring to all college students, and taught my own discussion section for the course.
