I also spent several years tutoring in high school in science, math, English, and history.
As a tutor, my approach is hands-on, direct, and creative. A typical session might involve discussing a paper or problem set, digging deeply into a challenge or set of questions, leaving with clear next steps, and evaluating the session (What went well about our session? What could I do differently next time?)
