"Hello! My name is Kal H! I am currently a 2nd year PhD student studying at Purdue University. I graduated from Purdue University in 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, a Bachelor of Art in Creative Writing, and a minor in Psychological Sciences. I research bacteriophages and their application in biosensor development, biology education, and student-faculty partnerships. My work in education research has been showcased in many academic conferences as well as journal publications. If you are interested in viewing my CV, I am happy to provide that information.
I have 5+ years of experience with student teaching, peer mentoring, and tutoring, both in a classroom and one-on-one. I have worked with students from kindergarten to university with great success! I tutored primarily K-12 from 2019 to 2021 through an online tutoring platform, primarily in math (introductory/Common Core, pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry), reading and writing, and basic science. From 2021 to the present, I've worked with university students in the subjects of math, biology (introductory biology and microbiology), and writing (both writing and proofreading), in both online and in-person modalities. It was during this time that I earned the Foundations of College Teaching Certificate from Purdue University's Center of Instructional Excellence.
I love learning and understanding each student's learning style so that my teaching style and materials can cater to how each student likes to learn. My experience in education research has informed many of my teaching practices. My teaching practices align closely with Self-Determination Theory (SDT), a theory that emphasizes student motivation, competence, and autonomy. I find that personalization is key to academic success through tutoring and work hard to make sure that I meet each student's individual needs. I am happy to answer any and all questions about my experience to ensure a good fit. I look forward to working with you!" less...
