"Hi, I'm Laurie. I have a diverse background working with youth in education, and have always been motivated to see children succeed. I have a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. I gained my teaching certification for Middle School Math, Algebra and Engineering, and have been teaching in the public-school sector for 7 years.
I have always loved helping kids. Earlier on in my life, I was a camp counselor for a few summers with children 5-17 years old. I also lived in Japan for a year working as an assistant teacher in a Japanese kindergarten class. At the same time, I tutored many non-native English-speaking children and young adults. Following that, I was also a mentor to at-risk youth in Washington, DC during their after-school programs.
My experience with this diverse group of students have given me many different skills in building relationships with students of all ages, especially those that may need a little extra help. I currently teach middle school-aged students. I daily work with small groups of students and one-on-one with them. I also provide time after school for those students who might need or want to work in a more individualized environment.
Tutoring students has always been a love of mine. I believe that students can understand and retain so much more on a small-scale learning environment such as with a tutor. Combining the general knowledge, skills, and tricks of the trade I have gained as a teacher along with my true hope to build relationships with students is what I believe makes me a great tutor. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or if you would like to schedule a lesson!" less...
