"I have a strong background in the hard sciences—Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics—and extensive experience teaching both in the classroom and in 1-on-1 tutoring. At LSU (and Emory University before that) I taught Organic Chemistry CHEM 2261 and CHEM 2262 for over 27 years along with numerous graduate level courses. I love teaching, and even in the large lecture format I received high ratings from students because I can present complicated concepts clearly with a sense of the wonder and precision of scientific understanding.
I received my bachelor's degree from Caltech, majoring in Chemistry along with a challenging course load of advanced mathematics. I earned my PhD in Organic Chemistry from Yale University. Next, I did a post-doc at MIT in Organometallic Chemistry under Nobel Laureate Richard R. Schrock. When I work with students, I want to help them to lose their fear of math and science and start to understand the underlying concepts until they can solve problems, not through ineffective rote memorization but from a foundation of understanding. I believe that everyone has the ability to master complicated subjects if we find the right approach—conceptual understanding, puzzle-solving, hands-on practice etc.—based on the student's individual needs.
After retiring, I have been working for over three years tutoring middle school, high school, and college students. I specialize in chemistry at all levels, introductory physics, and mathematics through Calculus II. I provide an engaging and understandable approach to the material in a way that builds the confidence of even the most discouraged learner. I am happy to provide material to help my students practice and learn from. Feel free to contact me with any additional questions or to schedule a session!" less...
