Law to college application assistance may seem like a strange path, but these roles have something important in common- helping people tell their stories. Applying to school is one of the few times in our lives we are asked to create a compelling portrait of ourselves. It's uncomfortable, and not something we're socialized to do. What I love about this work is supporting applicants in finding their stories and exploring their uniqueness.
I'll be there every step of the way from structured brainstorming to outlining to drafting to the painstaking but crucial work of editing. We work until the students have an essay they can be proud of. Students often find that during this process, they become better writers, which is a gratifying bonus.
Applications aren't just personal statements, and I take a wholistic approach with each student. I assist on supplemental essays and activity lists for undergrad and resumes for grad schools. The student and I work to make sure their application reflects the many facets of who they are but still presents a cohesive application narrative. I also love working with students to build their school lists. Every student has a different approach to learning and I take that seriously. We start by talking about how they like to get feedback. Sometimes I'll make suggestions on an essay and they can run with it. Other times, we go sentence by sentence until an essay is done.
In addition to helping students with their applications, I teach at a law school and assist at a college prep program. This helps me stay up to date on what schools are looking for and meet students where they're at." less...
