"I have a degree in computer science from the University of Texas at Austin, a top 10 school for Computer Science in the nation. I studied various areas of computer science and software engineering. I learned a lot about programming languages such as Python and Java. I also learned a lot about programming methodology, data structures/algorithms, and best practices for software engineering.
I volunteered with Changing Expectations in Austin where I helped tutor middle and high school students in computer science. Changing Expectations involved hands-on activities that taught the students about cybersecurity, web virtual reality, robotics, and Python. I helped students learn solid programming fundamentals, various career opportunities in software engineering, and how to prepare for careers in software engineering. The sessions were weekly on Saturdays, and they were around 7-8 hours in length. The sessions centered around students working on their own personal projects, and us helping the students work on their software as needed.
I also volunteered with a student organization called Code Orange which tutored elementary students weekly in the Scratch programming language. These activities involved creating fun, interactive games with the students. We would work side-by-side with a student to create their very own game. We would explain each part of the coding block to the students, and we would ask various questions to ensure their understanding of the purpose behind the code.
I happily receive any feedback on ways to improve. I am constantly trying to update my own approach to teaching and assisting students in their understanding of programming. I also love to talk with students to try to figure out better ways to assist them in their understanding of material." less...
