"Hi, I’m Nick. I have been interested in mathematics from a young age, which led to my majoring in mathematics in college and then obtaining a Ph.D. in mathematics from UC Berkeley. In graduate school I was a TA for honors undergraduate calculus courses and graduate courses in functional analysis, measure theory, and probability theory, which was the topic of my dissertation. Since graduating I have had diverse teaching experiences: devising math activities for 5-7 year olds at a YMCA summer camp, and working with high school math teachers in a public school in east Oakland. I have extensive experience tutoring students at all levels and in almost every aspect of mathematics, including elementary school, middle school, high school, undergraduate and graduate students, in short grade school to grad school.
I enjoy working one-on-one with students and providing the individual attention which really helps them develop the conceptual understanding they need in mathematics. My approach is to work patiently with the student, endeavoring to see their understanding of the problem at hand, and explaining why this will or won't work. If they are really stuck I will prompt them with a suggestion of what to do. Often students have an idea of what to do, but don't know how to express that in writing. In this situation I will provide a model of how to write a reasoned argument which they can adapt for similar problems.
I am happy to meet students in their home or in a public place such as a library. My schedule is flexible and my fee is negotiable in case of financial need." less...
