"I love working with students in a one-on-one context. I enjoy most seeing the breakthroughs and refinement that come with focused, guided study. I have taught music for over 8 years, and have a strong background in writing and visual art. I obtained my Master's degree in Secondary Education, and have Oregon certification (comparable to NY state) in English and Art. I have extensive experience in writing research papers within a wide range of subjects, and am proficient in grant-writing and composition of essays for college applications. As far as personal work, one of my poems was published last year in a nationally-distributed, NY based literary journal.
I have a strong background in reading and writing across a range of genres. My BA was heavily writing-intensive, with a focus in English, History, and Art History. I have a very high GPA from my university and scored well on the verbal section of the SAT.
I've been teaching music since 2018, often with 30+ students a week, and I have experience in Los Angeles, Portland, Oregon, and greater Philadelphia. I am proficient teaching piano, voice, guitar and intermediate drums, including reading and drum line material. I incorporate reading for all instruments, and also incorporate improvisation and composition depending on student interests. I have a strong vocal training background, and also teach sight singing. I studied the Taubman approach for piano with Robert Durso in Philadelphia, and have extensive training and college credit in classical and jazz performance, music theory, and ear training. I have a high student retention rate, am flexible and adaptive to a range of learning needs, and can teach from various idioms including pop and rock as well as jazz and classical.
I have been drawing seriously since my youth, and have a strong portfolio of figurative and abstract work. I was accepted to RISD's painting program, though I chose not to enroll. A third of my interdisciplinary BA was focused in studio art. I have expertise in all 2D media. I taugh" less...
