"Teaching Experience
I am an experienced teacher that has taught in the public schools for 43 years at virtually all grade levels, though the majority of the years were at the fourth and fifth grades. I also have taught remedial reading and writing at the middle school level, and social studies (current world problems and US history) at the high school level. Currently, for the past ten years, I have worked with incarcerated adults with passing the GED along with providing various career opportunities via STEM, e.g. 3-d printing, horticulture, and media production, etc.
Social Studies Teacher
I taught as a high school social studies teacher -- current world problems with seniors and US history with juniors. I also worked with fourth and fifth grade students to introduce and have passed two concurrent resolutions in the Idaho state legislature, with our students giving the opening debate in the House and Senate committees on both occasions. They also met with two US senators, four US House of Representative members, and three governors -- even hosting one governor and one US representative in our classroom. I also interned in Congress for a summer -- working back in Washington, D.C. in the congressman's office. I also have traveled, am certified in Spanish and French, and lived in other cultures (as a Peace Corps volunteer in Paraguay, South America, and as a teacher in the Alaskan bush in an Native American (Yupik and Inupiaq Eskimo) village that was on the Iditarod Trail.
Additional Skills
In a number of these teaching assignments, I have focused on teaching good working and thinking skills, worked to develop healthy attitudes, perseverance, tolerance, self-image, and problem solving skills.
I would prefer to tutor in a neutral setting, such as a coffee house rather than at either the student's or my house, but that can be negotiated." less...
